Paloma de la Cruz is a national figure in the contemporary art scene in Spain and one of the most prominent artists working in ceramics today.
The poetics, imagination, and artistic strategies of Paloma de la Cruz are deeply shaped by the poetic transformation of space and architectural elements. In her projects, we observe these interests unfold through a process of metamorphosis, whereby her monumental ceramic interventions reimagine architecture as both landscape and body. This embodiment of space leads to an act of re-dimensioning it as a form of corporeal geography, clothed in pulsating flesh and imbued with architecture’s own autonomous will. To achieve this transformation, Paloma de la Cruz employs solutions and ornamentation that oscillate between the architectural and the textile, allowing her to evoke the body through its paradoxical absence. Surfaces such as baseboards, walls, and tiled floors take on an ambiguous character, functioning both as traditional ornamental architectural solutions and, through the artist’s decorative approach, as representations of textiles. This duality explores a new understanding of architecture, where materiality and form intertwine to offer fresh insights.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous prestigious institutions, including the CAC in Málaga, the Pompidou Museum, La Térmica, as well as in a wide array of both group and solo exhibitions in Spain, Mexico, and France. She has been chosen to participate in the year’s edition of Casa de Velázquez with a year’s long residence.
