Maxwell grew up in rural New Jersey, USA. In 2017, he earned a dual degree in Fine Art and Art History and Theory from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. His graduate theses focused on problematics linked to materiality in ceramics.
Mustardo has indisputably established himself as one of the most influential voices of contemporary ceramics of his generation. His work has been recognized with honorable mentions by renowned figures such as Simon de Pury and supported by specialized critics who place him at the center of the current debate on the material and conceptual limits of the medium. His artistic practice encompasses academic writing, curating, teaching, design and sculpture. He has been an artist-in-residence at prominent institutions such as the Takaezu Studio, the Mendocino Art Center, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, the Sonoma Community Center, the New Harmony Clay Project, the C.R.E.T.A. Rome International Center, and Lefebvre & Fils. He currently serves as studio director at Takaezu Studio in Flemington, New Jersey.
